Fission of relativistic 238U projectiles is a new powerful method [1] for the production of very neutron-rich fission fragments. The relativistic kinematic renders possible the separation of the fission fragments with the fragment separator, FRS, at GSI Darmstadt and the identification of their mass and nuclear charge. In a recent experiment about 100 new neutron-rich isotopes were produced and identified for the first time, including the doubly-magic nucleus 2878Ni [2]. The method, the fission yields and the production cross sections, and the feasibility of these new isotopes for secondary beams will be discussed.
