Excited states in the two quasi–particle neighbours of 100Sn – 98Cd and 102Sn – were identified for the first time following fusion evaporation reactions. Half lives of long lived seniority isomers were measured in both nuclei. Due to the very low cross section for producing 98Cd and 102Sn with stable beams and targets, a special detector setup utilizing NORDBALL ancillary detectors and a recoil catcher device were used together with two EUROBALL Ge cluster detectors. A surprisingly small proton E2 polarization charge is found. The striking simmilarity of the shell structure of 56Ni and 100Sn allows conclusions on core excited states in 100Sn. Experimental results are discussed in the framework of shell model calculations.
