In LEAR experiment PS207, the Balmer α transitions of antiprotonic hydrogen and deuterium have been measured directly to compare the strong-interaction effects in the 2p levels of different antiprotonic hydrogen isotopes. The 105 MeV/c antiproton beam was stopped in the cyclotron trap in 20 mbar gas targets. The necessary energy resolution of Δ E/E ≈ 10−4 was achieved with a two arm Bragg spectrometer using spherically bent crystals. The reflected X-rays were detected in Charge Coupled Devices (CCD’s). The Balmer transitions of the hydrogen isotopes show an additional broadening and shift compared to the experimental line width and the purely electromagnetic transition energies as calculated from QED, which are attributed to the hadronic interaction.
