The 3p photoabsorption spectrum of atomic Cu displays two 3p3/2,1/2 →4s resonances as well as three weak 3p3/2,1/2 →ns,nd Rydberg resonances superimposed on the strong 3d continuum [1,2]. In order to determine the character and the decay channels of these resonances we performed photoelectron studies at the TGM-6 high-flux undulator station at the BESSY storage ring in Berlin. The assignment of the resonances is based on the Z+1 model. The results are compared to predictions based on photoion spectroscopy data [3], and to ab initio calculations using many-body perturbation theory [4] and R-matrix theory [5].
