The choice of plasma facing materials is an important design issue for the construction of a next step fusion device like ITER. To investigate the feasibility of tungsten, W-coated tiles were mounted in the ASDEX Upgrade divertor, whereas for the inner heat shield graphite tiles were used. In Alcator C-Mod all plasma facing components, including the divertor, as well as the heat shield, are covered with molybdenum tiles. Boronization was applied in ASDEX Upgrade from the beginning of the experimental campaign, whereas Alcator C-Mod was first operated without any low-Z coating. The concentrations of W (ASDEX-U) and Mo (C-Mod) were derived from the line emission of highly charged ions in the XUV spectral range. For the determination of the influxes, WI and MoI spectral lines in the visible range were used. The plasma contamination with the high-Z material will be compared for different operating scenarios. Additionally, the influence on the plasma parameters as well as on the total impurity content will be discussed.
