Pellet fuelling system technology at IPP and JET

Successful operation of a thermo-nuclear fusion device requires sufficient fuelling to replenish the burn-up losses and possibility to control the plasma particle balance. Moreover, the method applied for fuelling must be compatible with the desired operational scenario. At present, injection of cryogenic hydrogen isotope - mechanically accelerated by a centrifuge - seems to be the prime candidate for this task. The required high plasma densities and high particle rates cannot simultaneously met with other methods, since the high through-put is required in almost continuous operation. We report on the principles and technological developments used at IPP and JET with respect to high through-put hydrogen ice extrusion, fuel handling, pellet acceleration and guiding. A small system developed at IPP has already prooved the feasibility of adequate controlled fuelling on the mid-size tokamak ASDEX Upgrade. The expanded JET system - now being brought into operation on the JET torus - demonstrated quasi-continuous handling of fuel amounts approaching reactor requirements.
