We report on investigations of subrecoil laser cooling mechanisms for atoms used in atomic frequency standards. Particularly, we present numerical results of calculations for the element calcium (40Ca). Its narrow 1S0 -3P1 transition promises considerable improvements of ultra-high resolution spectroscopy to establish frequency standards with relative uncertainties much lower than those provided by the popular cesium atomic clocks. We perform calculations concerning velocity-selective coherent population trapping in a single- and a double-cascade scheme. It turns out that by the proper choice of certain parameters it is possible to cool calcium atoms, precooled in a magneto-optical trap, very efficiently below the recoil limit.
