Nuclear waste removal using particle beams - incineration with fast neutrons — •Jean-Pierre Revol — Emerging Energy Technology Group, CERN, CH 1211 Geneve 23

The management of nuclear waste is one of the major obstacles to the acceptability of nuclear power as a main source of energy for the future. A new experiment at CERN has tested the practicality of Carlo Rubbia’s idea to make use of Adiabatic Resonance Crossing to transmute long lived fission products. Spallation neutrons produced in a large lead assembly have a high probability to be captured on resonances in neutron capture cross-sections of elements such as 99Tc, 129I, etc. An accelerator driven sub-critical device using Thorium (Energy Amplifier), could transform, at a high rate, long-lived fission products into short lived elements. In addition, such a system operating with a fuel mixture of Thorium and Plutonium would be very effective in eliminating Plutonium down to acceptable concentrations. A very effective and realistic solution exists for the complete elimination of the Plutonium and minor Actinides stockpiles.
