Discrete Symmetries from Mapping Class Groups of 3-Manifolds — •Domenico Giulini — Fakultät für Physik, Hermann-Herder Str.3, D-79104 Freiburg
In a 3+1 - split formulation of General Relativity, discrete groups of mapping classes of spatial 3-manifolds act non-trivially on the reduced phase and configuration spaces. Their interpretation is either that of residual gauge or proper physical symmetries. We describe methods and results that lead to explicit presentations of such groups for many 3-manifolds.
