Within Newton’s theory of gravitation, a rigidly rotating disk of dust, for fixed angular momentum, can have an arbitrary large mass. In Einstein’s theory, the maximum mass M is given by Mmax = (cJ/G)1/2 where J is the angular momentum, c the velocity of light, and G Newton’s gravitational constant. For M→ Mmax the solution of Einstein’s field equations describing the rigidly rotating disk of dust [1] approaches exactly the extreme Kerr solution, i.e., a maximally rotating black hole.
