Search for Charm at HERMES — •F. Meissner and S. Brons — DESY - IfH Zeuthen, Platanenallee 6, D-15738 Zeuthen
The HERMES–Experiment measures spin structure functions of the nucleon via deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering using a polarized internal gas target in the polarized positron beam at HERA. 1996 was the second year of data taking.
The helicity of the nucleon adds up from polarized valence and
sea quark distributions, the gluons, and orbital angular momentum as:
1/2 = 1/2(Δ u + Δ d + Δ s) + Δ G + Lz.
Identifying different final state hadrons
allows to separate these various contributions.
The HERMES–Experiment is capable to observe semi-inclusive
channels since it utilizes several particle identification detectors.
The production of charmed mesons in spin dependent deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering is believed to give access to the polarized gluon distribution ΔG. This talk will summarize the present status of the analysis in the charm sector at HERMES.
