Using the step decoration effect, we prepared one-dimensional Fe stripes on a vicinal Cu(111) substrate (1.2∘ miscut). Scanning tunneling microscopy studies demonstrate that the Fe stripes only form in the thickness range between 0.4 and 1.3 ML, where one dimensional coalescence and two dimensional percolation occur, respectively. The magneto-optical Kerr effect studies have shown that the Fe stripes have a perpendicular easy magnetization axis. Magnetic after effect measurements indicate that at low temperature (about 100 K) the magnetization of the one-dimensional Fe stripes decays slowly. In fact the magnetization curves exhibit hysteresis due to the slow decay of the magnetization. Above 270 K the saturation magnetization drops down considerably, indicating that the Fe stripes become nonmagnetic.
