Laser induced stress relaxation and shape forming of cartilages [1] will open new possibilities for the application of cartilage as transplantation material. At moderate laser treatment reshaping of cartilage without notable alterations of the cartilage structure has been demonstrated by light and scanning electron microscopy [2]. The goal of this work is to study laser-induced structural alterations in the cartilage matrix using scanning force microscopy. Samples of porcine nasal septum cartilage were irradiated with a CO2 laser with 50W/cm2, for 3s and 30s. Short time reshaping treatment modifies the cartilage matrix only little. In comparison with non-radiated cartilage, small holes of 100-300nm in size appear. In contrary, 30s laser treatment results in melting and denaturation of the cartilaginous matrix. Investigating section cuts of laser-treated samples, formation of small crystals up to 800nm in size has been observed at a depth close to the denaturation front.
