Thin films of α, ω-derivatized poly(2,5-dihexyl-phenylene-ethynylene) have been cast from solution onto ultraflat solid substrates. Up to a certain molecular weight, dynamic scanning force microscopy in tapping mode reveals a morphology wi th needles at the surface. Isolated needles could be prepared from more dilute solutions. The dimensions of the needles indicate monomolecularly thick assemblies with a width corresponding to the length of a single extended molecule. A statistical ana lysis of the needle widths allows an absolute determination of the molecular weight distribution of this rigid rod polymer. The properly functionalized needles are molecular assemblies ready to interface with gold nanoelectrodes.
