Phase-sensitive relaxation in molecular systems — •D. Kilin and M. Schreiber — Institut f"ur Physik, Technische Universit"at Chemnitz, D-09107 Chemnitz

The time evolution of an impurity vibrational mode, which is excited into a coherent state has been considered. The relaxation is stipulated by interaction with a heat bath. The obtained master equation is valid for arbitrary structure of the bath and is solvable analytically in the limits of small and large numbers of modes. For the latter case such effects as modification of the period of the wave packet motion and classical squeezing have been found [1]. The superposition of two coherent states as an initial wave packet allows us to obtain quantum interference and to study its collapse. The damping of the dynamics of the system is slow in comparison with the fast damping of the interference, which strongly depends on the distance between the coherent states in terms of the configuration coordinate. The peculiarities connected with the phase-sensitive character of the bath have been demonstrated for the evolution of the superposition into a mixture of states.
