The width of the photonic gap in the natural 3-dimensional photonic crystal opal was increased by depositing high refractive index coatings on its internal surface. Optical transmission and reflectance spectra showed the Bragg component and its dependence upon the angle of incidence of the light, lattice spacing, lattice ordering and the refractive index averaged over the lattice. The superlinear dependence of PL intensity upon the excitation power was found for opal with CdSe, that is apparently the result of the dissipationless radiation-to-matter interaction.
