Theory for Spinpolarized Oscillations of the Second-Harmonic Yield due to Quantum Well States — •Thomas A. Luce, Wolfgang H"ubner, and Karl-Heinz Bennemann — Institut f"ur theoretische Physik, Freie Universit"at Berlin, Arnimallee 14 D-14195 Berlin, Germany
Using an electronic tight-binding theory we calculated the nonlinear magneto-optical response from a x-Cu/1 Fe/Cu(001) system as a function of the Cu film thickness x. We find drastically enhanced oscillations of the SHG signal compared with linear optics, the amplitude and spin polarization nearly reach 100 %. Two oscillation periods of 6 and 11 ML are observed. From our calculation we conclude that quantum well states in the Cu overlayer are responsible for the oscillation. The large density of Fe d states close to the Fermi level results in a strong enhancement of the SHG oscillations.
