Ion-irradiation of thin ferromagnetic films provides a means to investigate the correlation between structural defects and magnetic properties. The radiation damages and the ion beam mixing at interfaces change the magnetocrystalline- and uniaxial-perpendicular-anisotropy in a characteristic way. As shown in a previous work [1], low dose (< 1016cm−2) Fe-ion irradiated Ag/Fe 20nm/Ag-layers are dominated by magneto-elastic effects, which result from strain relaxation. For higher doses an increase of the interface roughness is obtained, which influence strongly the surface anisotropy. To separate the different contributions of the perpendicular anisotropies we investigate in this work high dose irradiated Ag/Fe/Ag-(001)-layers with different Fe-thicknesses (5-20nm) and Fe-wedges (2.2-12nm) with conventional and lateral resolved (photothermally modulated) ferromagnetic resonance and X-ray scattering. First results of the effects of interface roughness on the surface anisotropy will be discussed. This work is supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, SFB 166.
