An idea to convert the energy of two-dimensional (2D) plasmons into electromagnetic radiation has being discussed since 1980 [1], but a theory of this effect is absent, and attempts to make solid-state devices based on this principle were so far unsuccessful. We have developed an analytic theory of the amplification of electromagnetic wave passing through a system “2D electron layer - quantum-wire grating coupler”. The transmission coefficient of wave T(ω,jdc) has been calculated as a function of frequency and dc electric current jdc flowing in the 2D layer, and threshold conditions for amplification [T(ω,jdc)>1] have been analysed depending on electron densities, mobilities, and geometrical parameters of the structure. Specific recommendations for designing terahertz wave amplifiers (generators) with a desired frequency are formulated.
