Size determination of semiconductor nanocrystals by Raman spectroscopy — •W. Cordts, G. Irmer, and J. Monecke — Institut f"ur Theoretische Physik, TU Bergakademie Freiberg, B.-v.-Cotta-Str. 4, 09596 Freiberg
Confined acoustical phonons in semiconductor nanocrystals , embedded in a glass matrix, have been excited with the help of Krypton ion and Titan Sapphire laser light and have been detected (first together with their overtones) in Raman spectra in the low frequency region between 10 and 60 cm−1 . Their frequency dependence on the particle size has been calculated by classical continuum theory of elasticity. The comparision of experimentally detected and calculated frequencies allows the size determination of the nanocrystals in good agreement with other direct methods. The lowest in frequency vibrations have been found to be of l=2 character.
