Nanostructuring on Si(001) using self-organisation — •H.J.W. Zandvliet and Bene Poelsema — Faculty of Applied Physics and Centre of Materials Research, University of Twente, P.O. Box 217, 7500 AE Enschede, The Netherlands
The self-organising 1-dimensional nanoscale network formation on Si(001) is studied with scanning tunneling microscopy [1]. The typical width of the quantum wires is 8-12 Å, whereas the averaged spacing between them varies between 15 and 60 Å. The domain structure of the 1-dimensional network obeys the size relations derived by Zeppenfeld et al. [2] for surface systems with long-range interactions decaying as L−2. Finally, the thermally induced wandering of the various types of 1-dimensional networks displays universal behaviour.
