UHV magnetic force microscopy as a tool to study magnetomechanical effects on a nanometer scale — •A. Wadas, M. Dreyer, M. Löhndorf, and R. Wiesendanger — Institut für Angewandte Physik, Universität Hamburg, Jungiusstr. 11, D-20355 Hamburg
Unique magnetic properties of magnetic materials observed on nanometer scale are of great interest in view of either possible applications or to acquire fundamental physical knowledge. We present an interesting magnetomechanical phenomenon found on ultra-thin Co films prepared in UHV and studied by means of UHV magnetic force microscopy. Ultrathin Cobalt films exhibit on nanometer scale surface expansion due to surface touching or rubbing by MFM tip. Domain nucleation associated with tip-surface contact has been observed. We explain it taking a magnetoelastic energy into account. Capability of MFM to ’write’ domains and subsequently image them opens the door for possible application.
