Evidence for a Stoner-like behavior of the surface state on
Gd(0001) — •C. Schüßler-Langeheine, E. Weschke, R. Meier, A. V. Fedorov, F. Hübinger, and G. Kaindl — Institut für Experimentalphysik, Freie Universität Berlin Arnimallee 14, D-14195 Berlin-Dahlem, Germany
We report on angle-resolved photoemission (PE) and inverse PE studies of Gd(0001) in the temperature range from 60 to 400 K. In contrast to previous spin-resolved PE studies, it is found that the surface state at Γ is well separated from the Fermi energy at low temperatures. With increasing temperature both the occupied and the unoccupied part of the d-like surface state shift towards the Fermi level. This rules out a pure spin-mixing behavior with a constant exchange splitting as claimed recently. Instead, the temperature variation of the surface-state exchange splitting is better described by a Stoner-like behavior, with an enhanced surface Curie temperature. Nevertheless, a small residual splitting above TC of the order of 100 meV cannot be ruled out.
