Time-Resolved Fluorescence Measurements on Poly(ethylene-2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate) — •C. Spies and R. Gehrke — Hamburger Synchrotronstrahlungslabor HASYLAB at DESY Notkestraße 85, D-22603 Hamburg

The time-resolved fluorescence behaviour of poly(ethylene-2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate) (PEN) and its structure unit model compound dimethyl-2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate (DMN) has been investigated at the synchrotron radiation laboratory HASYLAB at DESY. Measurements of DMN dissolved in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) have shown that depending on the concentration excimer formation is observed and the fluorescence decay curves can be explained by Birks kinetics model. This is in contrast to the results obtained on PEN films and solutions of PEN in HFIP excited at the same energy. In this case the fluorescence decay has to be fitted by a sum of three exponential functions. The triple exponential decay represents a parametrization of a distribution of decay-times. Our model calculations show that the decay curves can be explained by a simple model of two emitting species if one assumes excitation energy migration from monomer units (donors) to excimer sites (traps) by a Förster type mechanism.
