The potential energy landscape of glass-forming systems: a numerical study — •A. Heuer, S. Büchner, and H.W. Spiess — MPI f. Polymerforschung, Ackermannweg 10, 55128 Mainz
Many static and dynamic properties of glasses and supercooled liquids can be visualized in terms of the multidimensional potential energy landscape in configuration space. Here the potential energy landscape of a small glass-forming system is determined in a quantitative way. Crystalline and amorphous regions can be separated from each other. The dependence of the energy landscape on density is elucidated yielding a possible explanation of pressure-dependent low-temperature experiments on a polymer glass. Furthermore via comparison with molecular dynamics simulations it is checked to which degree the complex dynamics in the supercooled regime can be mapped on jump processes on the potential energy landscape.
