Low frequency admittance and capacitance of mesoscopic conductors — •Thomas Christen1 and Markus Buttiker21ABB Research Corporate, CH-5405 Baden-Daettwil, Switzerland — 2DPT, University of Geneva, 24 Quai E. Ansermet, CH-1211 Geneva, Switzerland

We present a theory for the low frequency admittance and the capacitance of low-dimensional phase-coherent conductors. We emphazise gauge invariance and current and charge conservation of the theory. We apply our approach to a quantum point contact. It turns out that the capacitance of the quantum point contact decreases with decreasing reflection probability and vanishes for full transmission. The emittance which measures the imaginary part of the low frequency admittance also decreases but becomes negative for full transmission.
