We discuss the spin-phonon interactions in ordered ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. We study in particular the possible occurrence of non-reciprocal (non time-invariant) elastic effects due to the magnetoelastic couplings. We rederive Kittel’s [1] semiclassical prediction of non-reciprocal phonons in ferromagnets by calculating the mixed magnon-phonon states in the Liouville representation. We then examine in detail the conditions for non-reciprocal phonons to occur in antiferromagnets.
