The boson-fermion model is important for several aspects of high-Tc superconductivity. It has been invoked e.g., as a phenomenological description of an electron system in the limit of extremely strong electron-phonon coupling or, in 1D, to model the dynamics of charge carriers in a 1D metal embedded in an active medium (thought to describe carriers inside the stripes found in some pervoskites). Here, we present a novel Bethe Ansatz developed by one of us (YW) which allows an exact solution of the 1D boson-fermion model. We use this solution to discuss the Luttinger liquid properties and pairing correlations of this model in its low-energy sector. We compare these results to a renormalization group analysis based on perturbing a Luttinger liquid theory. This approach allows to extend the model to include electron-electron interactions which are beyond the possibilities of the Bethe Ansatz. We also compare our exact critical exponents to those found by Ranninger et al.
