The electronic structure of the semiconducting and layered-perovskite related compound SrNbO3.45 has been investigated by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, both angle-integrated (UPS) and angle resolved (ARUPS). From constant initial state spectroscopy, the low intensity feature observed in UPS at 0.6 eV below the Fermi level, EF, is attributed to Nb 4d states. UPS measurements indicate that the main valence band consists essentially of oxygen 2p states. ARUPS studies show two bands near the EF with very different dispersions: Along Γ-X, one band exhibits no discernible dispersion, whereas the other disperses strongly and even crosses EF. No dispersion appears along the Γ-Y direction. The induction of metallic and possible superconducting behaviour in this layered niobate system is also discussed.
