Orbital magnetism of classically chaotic quantum systems — •Bernhard Mehlig and Klaus Richter — Max-Planck-Institut f"ur Physik komplexer Systeme, Bayreuther Str. 40, Haus 16, 01187 Dresden

We consider a ring threaded by a magnetic flux and calculate the orbital magnetic susceptibility. Assuming chaotic classical dynamics, we derive a semi-classical approximation for the orbital susceptibility and compare the results with exact quantum-mechanical calculations. In particular, we discuss the temperature dependence. At low temperatures, action correlations determine the magnetic response.
