Electroluminescence properties of self assembled PPV/J-aggregate films — •S. Bourbon, B. Richter, and S. Kirstein — MPI für Kolloid- und Grenzflächenforschung, Rudower Chaussee 5, D-12489 Berlin
We investigate the optical and electrical properties of self-assembled films that consist of PPV and aggregates of a cyanine dye (TDBC). TDBC is known to form J-aggregates in aqueous solution at room temperature. The latter show intense and narrow fluorescence emission that is resonant to the absorption band and located at approx. 600 nm. By alternate adsorption of the positively charged precursor of PPV and the negatively charged J-aggregates multilayered films are build on a transparent electrode (ITO). Afterwards, the PPV precursor is converted to its conjugated form by heating under vacuum and an aluminum electrode is evaporated on top of the film. Application of a negative potential to the Al electrode gives emission from the J-aggregates only as it is observed in the photoluminescence spectra. The PPV emission is completely quenched by the TDBC. An additionnal spin-coated PPV layer was deposited on top of the multilayers giving a 2-layer system which shows fluorescence and electroluminescence from both, PPV and J-aggregates. The intensity ratio strongly depends on temperature.
