Due to their photophysical properties color centers in diamond are promising candidates for use as nanometric light sources in near-field optical microscopy. Such color centers have been generated by us by electron as well as ion beam irradiation in bulk synthetic diamond crystals, nanocrystalline diamonds, and CVD-diamond layers followed by thermal annealing. Different spectral characteristics have been found for various samples and are attributed to color centers reported in the literature, as well as to contributions from graphitic carbon. Low temperature spectra have been obtained for comparison. Emission profiles of color center structures generated by focussed ion beams have been obtained for various excitation wavelengths using a confocal microscope.
