Fusion α-particles can potentially destabilize plasma equilibria in both 2D and 3D geometry.

A kinetic MHD energy principle is employed for a numerical stability analysis of the Wendelstein 7-X configuration. In comparison to MHD this energy principle yields – for a decreasing distribution function with energy – a stabilizing effect for thermal particles but a potentially destabilizing effect for energetic particles.

The CAS3D-K stability code classifies the bounce motions and the average magnetic drifts of the energetic particles and solves the according eigenvalue problem. In a first step for the sake of simplicity the assumption on the energetic-particle distribution function has been made that its influence is contained in the ratio of the pressures (phot/pplasma) only. The influence of the latter parameter and of the true plasma β (β=βplasma+ βhot) on the stability limits of a W7-X configuration will be discussed.
