Local Ordering and Dynamics in a Polybutadiene Blockcopolymer as Detected by Solid State NMR — •Thilo Dollase, Manfred Wilhelm, Ulrich Wiesner, and Hans Wolfgang Spiess — Max-Planck-Institut f. Polymerforschung, Ackermannweg 10, 55128 Mainz
A combination of different solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques is used to examine anisotropic chain dynamics in homo-polybutadiene (PB) and PB diblock copolymers. High resolution double quantum NMR spectroscopy is employed to observe dipolar interactions between adjacent protons. Combining the measured proton-proton dipolar couplings between the different functional groups in PB, a dynamic order parameter S(t) along the main chain can be determined. The present study focuses on a poly(styrene-b-butadiene) block copolymer (PS-b-PB). This system allows to investigate in which way fixing one chain end of PB affects the local order parameters as determined from residual dipolar couplings. The dynamics of PB can be investigated by solid-echo deuteron NMR experiments on PS-b-PB block copolymers containing a perdeuterated PB block. The results are compared to previous studies carried out on homo-PB.
