Long-time diffusion, rheology and glass transition of colloidal dispersions — •Gerhard Nägele, Johan Bergenholtz, and Adolfo J. Banchio — Fakultät für Physik, Universität Konstanz, Postfach 5560, D-78434 Konstanz

We briefly survey our recent theoretical findings concerning the long-time self- and collective diffusion, viscoelastic behaviour and glass transition of suspensions of spherically shaped particles. Our analysis is based on a mode-coupling scheme adjusted to colloid dynamics. We apply this scheme to dispersions of charged, neutral and sticky colloidal spheres. Both monodisperse and colloidal mixtures are considered. Various measurable quantities are calculated like, e.g., the dynamic structure factor, the long-time self-diffusion coefficient, the low-shear rate viscosity, and non-ergodicity parameters characterizing the glassy state. Our results for these quantities are compared, whenever available, with experimental data and with computer simulation results. We further comment on possible relationships between long-time diffusion coefficients and viscoelastic properties, as suggested by recent experimental work on suspensions of hard spheres. The mode-coupling scheme is shown to be a valuable method for calculating transport properties in colloidal systems, both for the fluid phase and near the glass transition.
