Dewetting kinetics of thin polymer films — •C. Lorenz, P. M"uller-Buschbaum, and M. Stamm — Max-Planck-Institut f"ur Polymerforschung, Ackermannweg 10, D- 55128 Mainz

Thin polymer films can be prepared on non-wettable silicon surfaces by spin-coating. Two systems of thin films were examined: pure polystyrene (Mw=8700 g/mol) and polystyrene blended with about 4% polystyrene-polyisoprene (Mw=4300 g/mol). Films of different thickness (19-30 nm) were annealed, at T=120oC and T=140oC, well above their glass transition temperature. The dewetting process [1] was observed in-situ by time resolved reflected light microscopy. The determination of the area of dewetted silicon surface with time leads to a characteristic behaviour of hole growth. The measured kinetics are independent of temperature, film thickness and the polymeric materials used in the experiments. This growth-charcteristic is modelled by a simple mathematical description of nucleation and growth processes. Additionally the influence of the blend compositions on the dewetting process was examined.
