Studies of Au+Au collisions at 6, 8 and 10.8 AGeV at the AGS — •A. Gillitzer — Physik-Department E12, Technische Universität München, D-85748 Garching, Germany
In a 3 months beamtime from November 1996 data were taken with the
E802 spectrometer [1] at the AGS for Au+Au collisions at incident energies
of 6, 8, and 10.8 AGeV. Experiment E917, a successor experiment of
E866 [2], has two main objectives, namely studies of the excitation
function of particle production and collective flow phenomena and,
at the full energy, the investigation of the possible medium modification
of the φ meson.
Indications for a shift of the φ mass in Si+Au collisions were discussed
in previous studies [3]. Compared to previous experiments the statistics
of accumulated φ→K+K− events has been considerably
increased. The sensitivity of the experiment for the observation of a possible
φ mass shift in the φ→K+K− decay is discussed
in comparison to simulations. Other aspects of the experiment are
the production of multistrange baryons such as Ξ and strange antibaryons
such as Λ and Ξ, and correlations of identical
particles including K−K− and of non-identical particles.
The instrumental improvements of the setup and first results of the
data analysis will be presented.
