A cellular logic trigger for CB-ELSA — •H. Flemming1, H. Matth"ay1, and CB-ELSA2 — 1Institut f"ur Experimentalphysik I, Ruhr-Universit"at Bochum — 2
For future experiments with the crystal barrel detector at ELSA, a new 2nd level calorimeter trigger is under design. Its principle of operation is fully based on the concept of cellular logic, which turns out to be an optimal tool for cluster- and PED-identification (PED = Partial Energy Deposit) in 2-dimensional detector arrays, mainly for the reason that a cellular logic trigger works highly parallel and without any topological limitations. By use of this novel trigger scheme the neutral multiplicity of events detected by the e.m. calorimeter can be determined in less than 5 µs. In addition the trigger will also generate lists of crystals which have been hit, ordered acording to their membership to the different clusters being observed simultaneously. The electronic will be implemented as full custom design in a 0.8 µm CMOS process. With this scale of integration logic cells corresponding to 16 or even more detector elements can be placed on one chip.
