Excitation functions of proton–proton elastic scattering cross sections have been measured in narrow energy steps in the kinetic energy range 0.5 to 2.5 GeV and the angular range 35∘ ≤ Θcm ≤ 90∘ [1]. Measurements have been performed continuously during projectile acceleration in the Cooler Synchrotron COSY/Jülich with an internal polypropylene (CH2) fiber target and with a detector providing 82% solid angle coverage. Particular care was taken to monitor luminosity and beam parameters as a function of beam energy. The results provide excitation functions and angular distributions of high precision and unprecedented internal consistency. No evidence for narrow structures was found. The measured cross sections are compared to a recent phase shift analysis [2]. Currently, preparations for measurements with a polarized COSY beam and a polarized atomic beam target to acquire excitation functions of the analyzing power A and the polarization correlation parameters ANN, ASS and ASL are under way.
