The β–decay of 56Cu to the doubly magic nucleus 56Ni was studied. 56Cu was produced by 28Si(32S, p3n) fusion–evaporation reactions at the GSI online mass separator. This decay, characterised by an unusually high QEC value of 15300(140) keV, is expected to make a major part of the allowed β–decay strength accessible to experiment. For the first time, the half–life of 56Cu was measured, and a decay scheme was deduced from the four observed β–delayed γ lines. The experimental results are compared with shell–model predictions.
