Magnetic Dipole Response in Deformed Rare Earth Nuclei — •R.R. Hilton, W. Höhenberger, and P. Ring — Physik-Department, TU München, D-85747 Garching

The investigation of spin-flip M1 strength in nuclei near closed shells has been a subject of interest for some time. However, it is only comparatively recently that data have become available for deformed rare earth nuclei. Observations have now established the presence of sizable M1 strength of two peak structure lying in the 5-10 MeV region. The states concerned, studied within a self-consistent Quasi-Particle Random Phase Approximation using Skyrme forces, are identified as two new collective modes in heavy deformed nuclei, namely proton and neutron giant spin-flip resonances. Preliminary observations obtained in recent γ,γ′ experiments with 154Sm are also examined and tentatively interpreted as components belonging to a highly fragmented collective isovector spin-flip mode.
