Using a pseudoparticle simulation technique we are able to simulate large amplitude isoscalar octupole excitations in a finite nuclear system. We want to test the hypothesis by Swiatecki and coworkers that octupole motion should be overdamped [1,2]. Dependent on the initialization we can either observe clear octupole modes or overdamped octupole modes which decay immediately into quadrupole ones. We propose that octupole modes should be observed in central asymmetric collisions of heavy ions with mass relation 3:7.
