At the SPS first hints of directed flow and azimuthal asymmetries have been
observed. The WA98 experiment, with its variety of azimuthally symmetric
detectors, is well suited for event shape analysis. The measurement of
directed flow of baryons with the Plastic Ball detector can be used to
determine the reaction plane. Preliminary results indicate
that a significant effect is present in semi-central reactions.
The azimuthal angle of the total transverse energy is determined for each
event using particles identified by the Plastic Ball detector.
The influence of the directed flow on the pT-spectra of photons,
measured with the leadglass calorimeter LEDA,
is studied for Pb + Pb reactions at 158 GeV per nucleon and
pT-spectra, measured for different orientations of the reaction
plane, are analysed as a function of centrality.
