Polarized Protons at COSY — •Andreas Lehrach — Institut fuer Kernphysik, Forschungszentrum Juelich, Postfach 1913, 52425 Juelich
The COoler SYnchrotron COSY at the Forschungszentrum Jülich
accelerates protons to momenta between 600 and 3400 MeV/c.
In addition a polarized beam can be produced und injected.
A polarized ion source, developed by a collaboration of the
universities Bonn, Cologne and Erlangen is in operation.
During acceleration in COSY imperfection and intrinic
resonances can depolarize the beam.
In 1996 we have accelerated the polarized beam to
2000 MeV/c for the first time.
After the commissioning of a tune jumping system in 1997 we
are able to preserve the polarization at strong depolarizing
intrinsic resonances and accelerate the beam to
maximum energy.
The correction of depolarizing resonances at COSY is
discussed and calculations for a Siberian Snake to
deliver longitudinal polarization to internal experiments
are presented.
