Background Situation at KARMEN after the Upgrade of the Veto System — •P. J"unger, Universit"at Erlangen - N"urnberg

The Karlsruhe Rutherford Intermediate Energy Neutrino Experiment (KARMEN) is taking data since 1990 at the pulsed spallation neutron source ISIS. ’Beam dump’ neutrinos (νµ, νe and νµ) from the π+-decay chain are used to investigate ν-induced reactions as well as to search for neutrino oscillations. In 1996 an additional vetocounter layer was installed inside the iron shielding to reduce the cosmic background for neutrino oscillation search in the appearance channel νµνe. 3500 tons of steel had to be removed to install the 136 individual modules of the new veto system.

The data of the first year of measuring time with the new setup will be presented with special emphasis on the achieved background reduction. A first analysis shows the expected background suppression of more than one order of magnitude, which allows us to test the reported evidence from the LSND experiment[1] within two more years of data taking.
