Systematic Studies on Clustertargets — •C. Thomas, A. Khoukaz, T. Lister, C. Quentmeier, and R. Santo — Institut f"ur Kernphysik, Universit"at M"unster, D-48149 M"unster*
Clustertargets are used in storage ring experiments as windowless internal targets. They combine high target densities of ρ∼ 1014 atoms/cm2 with very low pressures in the scattering chamber. Furthermore, these targets are extremely pure, their dimensions are well defined and their densities can be varied within orders of magnitude. Systematic investigations on the production of clusters are necessary in order to understand the processes of clustering. Therefore the influences of the nozzle diameter, the nozzle temperature and the inlet pressure on the formation point of clusters and on the absolut target density have been investigated. Additionally, the stability of clusters as a function of the residual gas pressure has been studied. In order to get more detailed information about the properties of clusterbeams, mass spectroscopy experiments are in progress. The results of these investigations will be presented.
