Neutrino-produced Charmed Mesons — •O. Melzer — National Institute for Nuclear and High Energy Physics (NIKHEF), POBox 41882, NL-1009DB Amsterdam
The CHORUS (WA95) experiment, designed for νµ → ντ oscillation search in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam, has recently finished data taking (≈ 7 × 105 νµ charged current events from 1994 to 1997).
The CHORUS detector setup is hybrid in its combination of totally different techniques. Nuclear emulsion acts as a neutrino target with high precision tracking capabilities for shortlived particles over a long data collection time. It is followed by a fast electronic detector for muon and hadron spectrometry and calorimetry, and for locating the neutrino interaction vertex in the emulsion.
Data collected in the emulsion target during 1994 and 1995 are being scanned and analysed. First observations—together with production and subsequent decay modes—of charmed mesons produced in neutrino interactions in the emulsion will be discussed.
