The hyperon beam line at Fermilab provides a 650GeV/c secondary beam with a Σ⁻/π⁻ ratio of about 1.5. Combining this beam with the high accuracy tracking devices of the SELEX silicon detector system offers a unique opportunity to study energetic hyperon - nucleon interaction.
Using the SELEX spectrometer we have recorded more than 100 million minimum bias events on Be, C, CH₂ and Cu targets in the 1997 run.
The aim of the present study is the determination of the Σ⁻ and π⁻ total cross sections on nuclei and protons. The analysis method chosen is a transmission technique.
The method and the status of the analysis will be presented.
