Status of the REX-ISOLDE project — •O. Kester, D. Habs, and the REX-ISOLDE collaboration — Sektion Physik der LMU München, Am Coulombwall 1, D-85748 Garching
The Radioactive beam Experiment (REX-ISOLDE) [1] a pilot experiment testing a new concept of post acceleration of radioactive ions at ISOLDE/CERN is now under progress. One aim of the experiment is the spectroscopy of very neutron rich nuclei by Coulex and transfer reactions [2]. Radioactive singly charged ions delivered by the on-line mass separator ISOLDE are first accumulated in a Penning trap, then charge breeded to A/q = 4.5 in an electron beam ion source (EBIS) and finally accelerated in a LINAC from 5 keV/u to the final energy between 0.8 and 2.2 MeV/u. In the next shut down period of ISOLDE the charge breeding and the mass separation system will be installed. First test measurements of the REX-trap will start in December 1997. The resonant structures of the LINAC consist of a Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator, an interdigital H-type structure (IH) and three seven gap resonators, which allow a variation of the final beam energy. The RFQ-vacuum tanks has been copper plated and delivered. First tests of the RFQ will be performed at the Munich Tandem Laboratory in spring 1998. The change of the final energy of the IH-structure between 1.1 MeV/u and 1.2 MeV/u by adjusting the gap-voltage distribution due to capacitive plungers has been calculated with MAFIA and tested by model measurements [3]. The vacuum tank is ordered and will be finished in March 1998. The design of the seven gap resonators and the beam transfer line to the target is completed and all model measurements are done. The production of the resonant structures of the seven gap resonators is almost finished. The plan is to be operational with LINAC at the end of 1998. First test measurements of a prototype of a 6-fold segmented encapsulated Ge-detector of the MINIBALL have been performed. In addition the target chamber and the particle detector are under construction. This report gives an overview of the status of the project and of the design of the REX-ISOLDE components.
