Total and differential cross sections for the 6Li(d,α)4He and
6Li(d,p)7Li reactions have been measured for deuteron energies
between 30 and 60 keV at four backward angles. The deuterons were impinged on
a thick metallic 6Li target. The angular distribution was expected to be
isotropic for both reactions due to the 2+ (s-wave) subthreshold resonance
in the compound nucleus 8Be.
The angular distributions observed for the (d,p0) and (d,p1) reactions are isotropic indeed, while the (d,α) reaction shows an anisotropy of the form (1 + A cos2 θ), where A≈0.25. Calculations of the direct reaction contribution in the frame of zero range DWBA theory cannot explain the full deviation. As possible explanations for this effect will be discussed an enhancement of the direct reaction component because of interference effects with the subthreshold resonance and single-particle phenomena for the initial reaction channel optical potential.
